History

Although Hanatoki Machiya House started officially welcoming guests in March 2022, it has existed for years. Machiyas go back to the Heian Period (794 - 1185) and were most commonly used during the Edo Period (1603 - 1868). Merchants and artisans used to treat these townhouses both as their homes and shops. The shop part used to be at the front of the property, while the living quarters were at the back. The Japanese Building Standards Act of 1950 ruled the old construction methods of machiyas as unsafe, which led to many of them dilapidating.

Some, however, were renovated and restored by companies such as Machiya Residence Inn. This company has been working since 2010 to preserve machiyas and Japanese culture in general. Hanatoki Machiya House is also one of their projects. Other machiyas under the company include Fujinoma Machiya House in Kyoto and Shiori Machiya House in Kanazawa.

Design and Architecture

Hanatoki Machiya House retains its traditional kyo-machiya architecture, or architecture typical to Kyoto's machiyas. This includes the 'unagi no nedoko' (eel's sleeping space) style of architecture, where the layout is long and narrow. Ichimonji (roof tiles with a wave-like pattern) tiles, wooden koshi (latticework), sudare (blinds), and a pretty red paper lantern welcome guests to the house.

As you enter, you'll find the doma area (earthen-floored area used as a casual space), featuring a dining table and kitchen. From here, you can get a glimpse of the tsuboniwa (small inner garden), which can be best enjoyed from the engawa (wooden deck). The Japanese-style room comes with smart black tatami mats on the floor, a tokonoma (an alcove for displaying artwork), and a kakejiku (hanging scroll) on the washi-papered wall. The Western-style bedroom offers a chic ambiance with rich woodwork and pretty paper lamps. The best part about the machiya is the kiyomizu-yaki pottery displayed in different parts of the house.

Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
