Even inside the machiya, you'll be surrounded by traditional architecture and decor. There are Japanese-style rooms where you'll feel like a local, while a Western-style room is also available as an option. The gorgeous kitchen and dining area is ideal for sharing homemade meals. There's also a tsuboniwa (small inner garden) where you can breathe in some fresh air. If you like to explore, visit the many historical and cultural attractions near the machiya.

History

Shiori Machiya Holiday House is one of the old townhouses in the historic Nagamachi district, part of the Machiya Residence Inn brand. The latter took the initiative to restore and preserve old Japanese townhouses or machiyas in Kanazama, Kyoto, and Takayama City. Since the company was formed in 2010, they've been meticulously renovating machiyas and transforming them into well-equipped holiday homes. Machiyas were most prevalent in the Edo era but fell into disrepair after the 1950s. In 1950, a bill was passed prohibiting the construction of machiyas. Since then, no new machiyas were constructed. However, many companies, such as Machiya Residence Inn, have taken similar initiatives to preserve the old ones and give visitors a taste of the traditional Japanese style of living.

Design and Architecture

The machiya's location in the former samurai district of Nagamachi has quite an influence on its architecture and decor. Enter the property through a wooden gate characteristic of the houses in the district. Inside, the furnishings are mostly made of wood and bamboo to create a natural vibe. There's an abundant use of the moon motif, inspired by the samurai culture's tsukimi (moon-viewing) custom. For example, there's a moon made of gold leaf and red lacquer in the dining area. The machiya also offers a traditional tatami room with straw mats in place, along with a tokonoma (an alcove for displaying art). Meanwhile, the Western-style bedroom features a wall covered in gold leaf. The bathroom also comes with traditional features, such as the goemon-style bathtub.

Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
