Hanakagari Machiya

Shimogyo-ku Shimozaimokucho 446, Gion, 600-8017 Kyoto, Japan

Overview

Kyoto is a very beautiful city, filled with wondrous historic sites, including some that date back over a thousand years. It's also orderly and well-kept, a point of pride to the locals, in part due to the city being Japan's Imperial Capital for over 1100 years. Some neighborhoods do end up more picturesque, and Hanakagari Machiya is in one of those locations. Hanakagari Machiya sits together with its twin Hanagoromo Machiya next to the Takase River, a gorgeous canal lined with plants and trees that bloom with the seasons. Inside, the home is fully equipped to accommodate a small family or group. Despite the snug space, guests are sure to find it a comfy and welcoming stay.

History

Hanagakari Machiya is found together with its twin property Hanagoromo Machiya straddling the border of Central Kyoto and Higashiyama. Though these two machiya have long since been refurbished and modernized, their historic features are quite well-preserved. Granted, they're no longer shophouses with wares on display but they still have that aura of being warm and welcoming. One very noticeable difference with other properties of Machiya Residence Inn is that Hanagakari isn't the elongated "lair of an eel" type of machiya. Despite that difference, however, it's every bit the posh and cozy home that excellently represents Kyoto's culture and heritage.

Design and Architecture

Japanese homes are known for being ingenious when it comes to maximizing available space, and Hanagakari Machiya is no different. Upon entering, guests will immediately find the dining area and kitchen, with a Japanese-style tatami room a bit further at the back. The bathroom is also found on the first floor, tucked away in the corner. One very noticeable difference with other Machiya Residence Inn properties is that there is no tsuboniwa garden. That said, the lovely garden-like curb next to the canal does provide plenty of green beautification in the area. On the second floor are the two main bedrooms, one in Western-style and the other in traditional Japanese style with tatami flooring.

Dining

Compact but well-equipped and well-stocked would be a fitting way to describe the kitchenette of Hanagakari Machiya. Aside from the cooking appliances, there's also a laundry machine here, which is quite handy for when you're multitasking. For grocery shopping, the closest supermarket is Kyoto Takashimaya Shopping Center, although Nishiki Market is also nearby if you travel just a little further. If you've got the budget to eat out, you can try the local establishments and discover some new favorite dishes. Some nearby food spots include Suba which is a local soba noodle shop, and the nearby izakaya Moshimoya.

Events and experiences

Cultural Experiences

Hanakagari isn't just located in a beautiful neighborhood, it's also conveniently near several of Kyoto's highlight attractions. If you travel to the east past the bridge past Gojo Bridge or Matsubara Bridge, you'll find yourself in Higashiyama. This is where you'll find the historic streets of Sannenzaka and the world-famous Kiyomizu-dera. Over at the south Hanagakari's neighborhood is Shosei-en, a peaceful and picturesque garden park owned by the Buddhist temple Higashi-Hongan-ji. Although the garden and Higashi-Hongan-ji are separated by a couple blocks, the actual temple is also worth checking out.

Other Celebrations

With Hanagakari Machiya's limited space, it would make sense that parties would be discouraged or prohibited on the property. However, you can still try to get in touch with the host and see if they can make arrangements or give recommendations for nearby establishments that can provide a venue for your birthday or anniversary.
