Arashiyama is known for its towering bamboo groves, romantic train rides, and riverside views. In Arashiyama Benkei, a traditional ryokan, guests are given the full experience of staying in a Japanese inn. Its interiors are reminiscent of most ryokans, with traditional tatami rooms, shoji sliding doors, and garden views that look straight out of a painting. Guests who prefer modern conveniences can opt for a Western-style room, boasting a private onsen and panoramic views of the river. Dishes prepared in the ryokan are inspired by Japan’s four seasons, with vegetarian and vegan options available. Aside from exploring Arashiyama’s natural and cultural spots, guests can take a relaxing dip in the many onsen baths available.
Kyoto has been a favored destination among tourists for its rich history, mouthwatering cuisine, and stunning natural wonders. Arashiyama, in particular, used to be a retreat that hosted the royal family and members of nobility. And located in the heart of Arashiyama is Arashiyama Benkei, a traditional ryokan where guests can unwind and reconnect with nature.
Arashiyama Benkei used to be a country estate during the Heian Period and welcomed vacationing court nobles. Some of the most notable guests in the ryokan include the King of Denmark, who also planted a yellow pine tree in the garden during his visit in 1930. Since then, the ryokan became a popular vacation spot in Arashiyama. Its riverside location is also a highlight of its own, as guests can have front-view access to Japan’s changing seasons—from the pink petals of spring to the fiery red hues of the foliage in autumn.
Arashiyama Benkei is characterized by its sukiya-zukuri architecture, giving it an elegant yet natural feel. Natural materials like wood, paper, and bamboo are evident in the ryokan, making guests feel as if they’ve traveled back in time. Sukiya-zukuri architecture also emphasizes minimalism and simplicity in harmony, which can be found in the thoughtful wall decor and art present in each room. From the shoji sliding doors and windows, guests have a view of the surrounding garden while letting natural light in.
Although most rooms in the ryokan are Japanese-style rooms, a newer Western-style room offers sweeping views of the river and a private onsen.

Arashiyama Benkei proudly translates the beauty of Japan’s four seasons in its cuisine, offering diverse flavors that are a feast to the eyes and tastebuds. The authentic kaiseki course uses seasonal ingredients, and guests may enjoy a delightful serving of tempura, sashimi, and local vegetables, carefully prepared and plated. From bright and fresh flavors in spring to warm and flavorful meals in winter, these dishes best reflect the season, adding a personal and memorable touch to the dining experience.
Vegetarian and vegan kaiseki courses are also available in the ryokan, and guests who’d like to avail this must inform the property at least three days in advance.
Arashiyama Benkei offers immersive cultural experiences for guests within and outside its walls. For those who want to relax, the ryokan has five onsen baths where you can enjoy a healing dip in its waters. There are two indoor baths, Ichi no Yu and Ni no Yu; two open-air/outdoor baths, Go no Yu and San no Yu; and an open-air bath, Roku no Yu. All onsens are private, so guests can take their time with their loved ones or families. As a result of increasing tourists in Kyoto, the ryokan also has adopted a tattoo-friendly policy where guests with tattoos are permitted to use the facility.
Arashiyama is blessed with plenty of natural and cultural experiences: from bamboo forests and gardens to annual festivals. Aside from the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, guests can stroll across Okochi Sanso Garden or take the Sagano Romantic Train and enjoy postcard-perfect views of Arashiyama. For museum lovers, The Kyoto Arashiyama Orgel Museum showcases thousands of music boxes spanning different time periods.
As for festivals, the Arashiyama Momiji Festival is a popular autumn viewing event where locals and tourists gather to admire the fiery hues of the foliage. Winter illuminations are also a must see for tourists visiting around December.
The ryokan offers two venues for small parties and celebrations: Hananoya, an enclosed dining venue, and Momiji, a larger and more spacious venue with sliding doors that boast views of the Katsura River. To use the rooms for birthday or anniversary celebrations, reservation is required. For banquets and parties with for 10 people and above, a special bento set is available using seasonal ingredients with vegetarian and vegan options.
Should you need a venue to accommodate bigger groups, you may ask the ryokan staff for local establishments or other recommendations.
