Situated in Jodhpur's northeastern section, RAAS Jodhpur's story began as a haveli built in the 18th century. Over the years, sections were added to the haveli, such as the Darikhana or Chamber of Carpets, and the more recent Baradari , which served as the Thakur's entertainment pavilion. In modern times, those locations are dining venues for the hotel's signature restaurants. The stables were also later changed into alcoves for relaxation, providing a place to unwind for guests.
It was only in 2007 when the brothers Nikhilendra Singh and Dhananjaya Singh began a project to convert the haveli into a publicly available hospitality accommodation, intending to carefully preserve the original features and furnishings while also adding modern conveniences such as internet access and televisions. The project was finished in 2009, becoming the first property to be developed and made publicly available under the RAAS label as a heritage boutique hotel, fulfilling a desire that the owners had since childhood. To this day, the property continues to provide its customers with its own unique brand of hospitality, providing them with a fine living experience in the heart of Udaipur.
Design and Architecture
Despite the renovations, RAAS Jodhpur features well-preserved Rajput architecture befitting of its origins as a noble's haveli, being most apparent in its preserved use of earthy tones and stonework for the facility's exterior. Another example can be seen in the restaurant Baradari, which boasts twelve pillars of a traditional design and orientation, staying true to the term "baradari, meaning twelve openings. Passageways and entrances feature classic arches that provide open views of the hotel's courtyards, while antique shrines are maintained for adherence.
By contrast, interior spaces of the property, such as rooms and lobbies, are more modernist in design, with rooms featuring bright and neat surfaces and with furnishings that emphasize comfort over form. Those with mobility issues can also be accommodated at the property because it has been renovated to be wheelchair accessible.
As part of the Green Initiative of RAAS Hotels, the property also has certain green innovations implemented, such as locally-sourced construction materials and labor, solar-powered water heating, a vegetable garden, a Platinum LEED-rated air conditioning system, and other additions meant to meet their sustainability commitments.
