Scroll down to learn all about Hida Furukawa Yatsusankan, a traditional ryokan in Hida City, Japan.

History

Hida Furukawa Yatsusankan had a humble beginning as a simple inn. It was opened by Sangoro from Ecchu Yatsuo towards the end of the Edo Period (1603 - 1868). Sangoro named the inn "Yatsusan" as a tribute to his hometown Yatsuo and also included a part of his name in it. Over the years, the inn passed on to the following generations, each adding to its heritage. For instance, the fourth generation of owners used the telephone for the first time, even before it was used in the town hall. You can see it at the ryokan with a "Telephone No. 1" sign. When the inn was owned by the fifth generation, it also served as a recruiting center for working girls in the city.

The ryokan has existed for over 160 years, so it's natural that it has undergone many renovations, the most recent being in 2022. However, even as it's operating under the eighth generation of owners, it highlights rational features. It's also registered as a Tangible Cultural Property!

Design and Architecture

The unique part about this traditional ryokan is that its decor changes each month while staying true to its roots. You'll be surrounded by dolls, antiques, and other items, making you feel like you're in a museum. The architecture retains original details from the Edo Period. You'll feel like you're in a stunning maze as you enter the property. All three towers offer something different— Shougetsu gives out a palatial vibe, Kangetsu offers a lovely Japanese color theme, and Kougetsu features luxurious details. Wooden furnishings and tatami mat rooms abound on the property. You'll also find beautifully maintained gardens.

Vegetables are locally sourced, either from farmers or from the property's own farm. The city's famous Hida beef is also procured locally from Hurusato butcher shop. Dishes for each season are selected based on the availability of fresh products. For example, spring is the best time to enjoy wild vegetables, while winter highlights the cold yellowtail from Himi Bay. Fresh river fish is also available, such as ayu fish, iwana, or rockfish, and yamame. If you visit in autumn, you can try mountain products such as mushrooms, tiger blowfish, or pufferfish.

Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
