Yasudaya Ryokan (Shizuoka Pref.)

Industrial & Imperial Era
3-Star 8.8(24 reviews)
19 Uchiuramito Numazu-shi, Uchiura Bay, Numazu, Japan, 410-0223

Overview

Once a sleepy seaside inn on the coast of Izu, Yasudaya Ryokan has become famous for being the favored establishment of the novelist Dazai Osamu. In more recent years, it has also been part of the anime series Love Live! Sunshine!! as the inspiration for the main heroine's home. Yet despite its fame, the ryokan retains the diligent and well-mannered hospitality it upheld since 1887. Guests are encouraged to feast on their signature seafood kaiseki cuisine. Those looking to relax at an onsen will be heartened to know about the ryokan's lovely bathing facilities. And because of its beautiful seaside setting, cultural and outdoor experiences are plentiful, making your trip to Numazu as fun-filled as you'll make it to be.

History

Yasudaya Ryokan was originally in 1887 as an inn that catered primarily to merchants plying their trade in Izu Province. It would eventually relocate to its present-day location in 1918, taking advantage of the seclusion and wondrous seaside scenery and turning itself into a distinguished establishment. The famed novelist Dazai Osamu, one of the most influential writers of the Showa Era, would fall in love with this seaside inn. He would begin and complete several parts of his bestselling novel, Shayou (The Setting Sun), during his stay in what is now the Tsukimisou Suite. Yasudaya would dedicate a small library and museum called Izu Bunkou to commemorate his visit.

The ryokan underwent major renovations in 1997, during which the ryokan's large bath facilities were added. Each of the baths was once again inspired by and named after Dazai's works. It was also during this time that the inn eschewed the use of slippers in its indoor areas, fitting the corridors with tatami mats and encouraging guests to walk barefoot while at the inn. The inn would be declared as a National Tangible Cultural Property in 2000, recognized for its enduring dedication and architectural and cultural significance.

The ryokan's fame would once again skyrocket because of the anime series LoveLive! Sunshine!! which aired in 2016. The home of the heroine, Takami Chika, is a near-complete replication of the inn, encouraging fans of the series, both local and from abroad, to visit and book a stay. A couple of years later, the Yasudaya Ryokan would celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2018.

Design and Architecture

Yasudaya Ryokan isn't just loved for its location and age, its beautiful architecture is also considered a cultural property that needs to be protected. One of the first things guests will notice at the inn is its eye-catching and unique lobby setup. It blends traditional architecture with its woodwork structure and Japanese furniture, but with Western-influenced interior arrangements reminiscent of a European salon.

For its guestrooms, the ryokan fully embraces the traditional aesthetics with ornately decorated sukiya-zukuri tatami rooms, complete with an engawa veranda and shoji screens for privacy. Special suites at the inn also come equipped with fancy open-air bathing areas with views of Mount Fuji.

Other Celebrations

Yasudaya Ryokan may not have a venue suitable for a celebration, but you can still try to collaborate with the management since they may be able to recommend local establishments for your party.
