Yamanoo

Ryokans Industrial & Imperial Era
3-Star 9.7(177 reviews)
Higashiyama 1-31-25, 920-0831 Kanazawa, Japan

Overview

Yamanoo is a traditional adults-only ryokan dating back to 1890. It started out and earned fame as a restaurant and was gradually transformed into a beautiful ryokan. The property's serene vibe is enhanced by the lush garden on site. You can also enjoy city views from Yamanoo. Aside from cozy Japanese-style rooms, the ryokan offers delectable local food and upholds its restaurant legacy. You may book one of the accommodation packages that include breakfast and/or dinner and have a hassle-free stay. Other highlights of the property include a 24-hour front desk and cypress baths where guests can indulge in relaxing soaks.

History

Yamanoo has been offering warm hospitality to travelers since 1890. Its first owner was Ota Takichi, a connoisseur. He was so talented that famous artist Rosanjin referred to him as "the most famous man in the Hokuriku region, a state guest of Kanazawa, and a great figure in the tea ceremony." Rosanjin was a frequent visitor and always appreciated Takichi's hospitality.

Kanazawa, during that time, was a center of cultural and artistic activities. Naturally, the ryokan attracted gourmets, tea masters, and connoisseurs from different parts of Japan. This included industrialist and tea master Masuda Donno. Eventually, the ryokan passed over to Hoshioka Saryo, who diligently maintained his predecessor's legacy. Over the years, the ryokan underwent several changes, while keeping its true essence intact. The property was even renamed Kanazawayamanoo at one point. Yamanoo is currently owned by Motoya Tatsuya, who belongs to the fifth generation of owners.

Design and Architecture

The ryokan's Meiji-era architecture has been beautifully preserved by the owners. On top of that, modern enhancements have been made to create a more functional space. Wooden furniture, paper lamps, shoji screens, and tatami mats highlight the traditional Japanese charm, while private bathrooms and flat-screen TVs appeal to modern standards. Each room comes with its own decor and views, so make sure to select wisely! Hanging scrolls, paintings, and ikebana flower arrangements add to the warmth of the accommodations. The garden also integrates features from the past, such as stone lanterns.

You'll get to taste fresh natural products and menus that change with the seasons. Enjoy kaiseki or gozen meals for lunch and dinner; the kaiseki breakfast is also highly rated by previous guests. The most-used ingredient is seafood, including eel and crab. Another highlight of your gastronomic experience here will be the attractive tableware, which adds to the aesthetics of the colorful dishes and was referred to as "the kimono of the food" by Rosanjin

Note: Kaiseki meals must be reserved five days in advance, and should be for at least two people.

Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
