Tsukihitei

Ryokans Interwar & Early Modern Heritage
5-Star 9.6(253 reviews)
Kasugano-cho 158, 630-8212 Nara, Japan

Overview

Surrounded by the lush primeval forest of Kasugayama, it could be said that Tsukihitei is a ryokan with deep connections to the Shinto spirits of Nara. Built in 1903 and surviving well after a century, this ryokan might even be blessed by the gods. Offering only five guest accommodations, there's a certain level of exclusivity that makes it highly sought-after. Tsukihitei had hosted members of the Imperial Family before, so its level of service is top-notch. Moreover, the ryokan's kaiseki cuisine is well-regarded in the Michelin Guide and should not be missed. The ryokan is also a blessing for lovers of the outdoors, as the Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest and its hidden wonders are right outside the inn's door.

History

The building that would eventually become Tsukihitei was well-known for its privacy and peaceful seclusion, originally built back in 1903 as a guesthouse for the Governor of Nara. Here, the governor would host many esteemed guests and will become a tradition of the ryokan by proudly serving personages such as members of the Imperial Family, as well as dignitaries and representatives.

As for its name, it's derived from the Tsukihi no Iwa, a sacred rock on the Yoshiki River that collects ice during the winter. This ice would then be stored and offered to the Imperial Court once the warmer seasons have arrived.

Design and Architecture

The architecture of Tsukihitei is distinctly Japanese, having preserved the traditional style of particularly with its exterior design. Modernized touches can be found here and there, done so in the name of practicality, such as the use of glass panels and electric lights. Even then, their aesthetics adhere tightly to classical conventions and blend seamlessly.

To preserve its level of service as well as traditional aspects, Tsukihitei has kept a slow pace of expansion and renovation. Even now the ryokan only has five types of accommodations for its guests. Aesthetically, however, these are designed in a Japanese-Western style with a combination of tatami mats and raised furniture. The most recently renovated are the Take and Wakaba guestrooms which now feature raised beds and stylish chairs and tables.

Destination wedding

A destination wedding in Japan provides a vastly different atmosphere, mainly due to the more reserved ceremonies as well as the patient and composed demeanor of its participants and guests. But if that's exactly what you're looking for when it comes to your special day, then go ahead and book your wedding in Nara. Traditional Shinto-style weddings for foreigners have been growing in popularity, and many wedding companies have begun offering specialized services just for that. Moreover, Tsukihitei is situated right next to Nara Park's many shrines and temples, so you'll have numerous choices on where to hold your ceremony.

For your wedding reception's venue, Tsukihitei's gathering hall Matsu no Ma can accommodate up to 40 guests. The historic inn has been hosting gatherings since 1903, and its bespoke services include captivating flower arrangements and wall decor. The inn's traditional garden is also available for wedding photoshoots, so make sure to get in touch with the management if you'd like to hold a photography session there.

Events and experiences

Cultural and Outdoor Experiences

During its time as the Imperial Capital during the Nara Period, from 710 - 784, the ancient city of Nara flourished and became a center for cultural and religious undertakings. Many of those religious and cultural sites survive to this day and are open to visitors. Many are even recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage The Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara. These include temples such as Kokufu-ji and Yakushi-ji, the grand Shinto shrine of Kasuga-taisha, and even the Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest where Tsukihitei stands. Mt. Kasuga itself provides plenty of opportunities to embrace the outdoors as it is filled with numerous hiking trails used over the centuries by all sorts of travelers such as pilgrims, merchants, and even warriors.

Other Celebrations

Although somewhat of a long shot, it's still worth notifying the management that you're planning to celebrate a special day during your stay. They might be able to assist in a bit of personalized service if you're commemorating a birthday or anniversary while under their care.

Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
