Set on Higashimuki Shopping Street, Tenpyo Ryokan keeps you inside the bustling heart of Nara. There are plenty of restaurants and shops to explore while staying here, and of course, you can even dine at the property with their on-site restaurant. Both Western-style and Japanese-style rooms are available here. There's an onsen as well so that you can have a rejuvenating holiday.
Popular places in the vicinity include Bar Amberjack, where you can head for a drink, Manshodo, where you can get some unique sweets, and Grancha, a Yamato tea daifuku store! Make sure to drop by the nearby sake breweries. For an authentic stay, read on for details about Tenpyo Ryokan, a traditional ryokan in Nara.
Tenpyo Ryokan was built over 70 years ago and has a simple and straightforward exterior. If you thought the indoors would be the same, you'd be mistaken, as it is here that the idea of ryokan comes to life!
Design and Architecture
Most of the rooms here have tatami mats, chabudai, tatami chairs, and sliding doors, immersing you in a traditional Japanese stay experience.
The public spaces embrace historic ideals, especially with the large display cases with ō-yoroi, samurai armor, (which they have a full set of, inclusive of the helmet, shoulder guards, and body armor), yumi (large bows), and other ancient military paraphernalia. They even have a full set of katanas. Of course, the public spaces are adorned with tatami mats and gorgeous paintings.

Ratsuku Restaurant
The on-site restaurant offers great breakfast options. Their beef sukiyaki course is sure to delight, especially with the finest Japanese black beef served. The light sauce is perfect for the morning and sure to fill you up with energy for the new day! The beef shabu-shabu is another popular dish, and barbecue meals and seafood options are available as well. Make sure to try out the unique Chagayu, a type of tea porridge that's a part of Nara's heritage.
Lunch usually involves pork and beef shabu-shabu, and you can savor some of that premium 'go pork' (Nara brand).
Cultural Experiences
You can't skip an onsen experience when in Japan, and you wouldn't have to go anywhere else for the experience while staying at Tenpyo Ryokan. Their Koumeiseki natural mineral bath lets you have that quintessential hot spring experience right in the middle of the city. Although the hot spring is artificial, the property uses Koumeiseki mineral to provide healing qualities to the water, and it is said to alleviate fatigue and body pain in general. If you're planning to go with a student group, special packages (inclusive of meals) are available.
