Senkyoro

Ryokans Industrial & Imperial Era
4-Star 9.2(412 reviews)
Sengokuhara 1284, 250-0631 Hakone, Japan

Overview

Dating back to 1870, Senkyoro welcomes travelers to a warm and comfortable stay in traditional Japanese-style accommodations. Its top selling point is the open-air onsen overlooking mountains and lush greenery. There's a massage chair for when you need to relax those muscles, as well as massage service for an extra fee. Guests will also enjoy monthly changing kaiseki meals here, curated with the freshest seasonal ingredients. Another highlight of the ryokan is the verdant garden, which offers a different scenery every season. Moreover, the family-friendly property is an ideal base for exploring the area, and the concierge will help you plan your excursions.

History

Senkyoro has been welcoming guests since 1870. The family-run property was first established in Minamihoen by a former head of the Hakone checkpoint. It was called Ishimura Ryokan during those times. The head of the family started sourcing hot spring water from Owakudani and establishing a hot springs resort. Eventually, the ryokan hotel shifted to its current location in 1913. Its name was also changed to Senkyoro.

Due to the property's location in Sengokuhara, a politically significant district at the time, most of its guests were celebrities, including politicians, business people, painters, and literary figures. Senkyoro was also significant in bolstering tourism in Sengokuhara. It has been sourcing hot spring water from Owakudani since 1912. Soon, other accommodations also boasting hot springs collaborated with Senkyoro to fund a hot water supply pipe from Owakudani. The torchbearers were the three families of Shibusawa, Mitsui, and Masuda. Together with a representative of the Okura group, they formed the Hakone Hot Spring Supply Co., Ltd. This initiative still helps transfer hot spring water to Sengokuhara and Gora.

Cultural and Outdoor Experiences

Expect an enriching holiday at Senkyoro with its cultural and natural offerings. Your stay in Japan won't be complete without an onsen experience, and luckily, this ryokan offers multiple options for that. There's a large public bath, a shared open-air bath, and private open-air baths that allow exclusive 45-minute sessions. Each features milky white calcium-sulfate-chloride-infused water derived straight from the source in Owakudani. No machine is used to help with water flow from the source to the bath; the process is completely natural thanks to the altitude difference. The onsens also have a pH of 2.0, which is great for your skin. After a relaxing bath, put on a yukata and feel more like a local.

The experience comes with an extra fee of 4,400 JPY (29.60 USD) and it's totally worth it! Meanwhile, outdoor lovers can explore the walking paths around the property while admiring the beautiful garden. The garden occupies around 4,9500 square meters (532,813.57 square feet) and displays a distinct beauty each season with the colors and vibe changing continuously.

Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
