3-Star 7.8(147 reviews)
Fushio-cho 128-1, 563-8585 Ikeda, Japan

Overview

Ryokan Fushioukaku is a beautiful property built during the Showa era. The highlight of the property is its healing hot springs, which are said to contain natural radium. Relax in the open-air springs while enjoying the mountain views and, if you time your visit right, views of the cherry blossoms. There are separate baths for men and women, and the property has a total of seven hot spring baths: two indoors and five outdoors. If you'd rather have a private dip, you'll be delighted to know that the rooms here come with open-air baths. Some of the rooms are equipped with massage chairs for even more relaxation. Read on to learn more about Ryokan Fushioukaku!

History

Established in 1933, seven years into the Showa era, the property has beautiful historic features that are preserved even with the recent renovations it went through. The rooms are the most indicative of the property's pedigree.

Design and Architecture

Most of the rooms are styled according to traditional Japanese aesthetics, with tatami mats, chabudai, sliding doors, and tatami chairs. Furthermore, the rooms come in four different types: modern Sukiya, mingei, naturalist, and generic Asian, so you can savor vibrant flavors of history! The open-air baths also embrace the historic ideal with a rock-cut structure mounted by a kirizuma roof.

Dining

The property has a restaurant styled along traditional aesthetics with private booths and single tables. The ryokan specializes in 'wild game meat' said to be rich in collagen and calcium, and you can savor wild boar and pheasant meat on your holiday here! Thin boar meat slices are served in special miso broth (boar shabu-shabu), and you can also get wild boar and pheasant stew. Kaiseki cuisine is served here and is crafted from seasonal ingredients such as matsutake mushrooms, pufferfish, black-haired wagyu beef, and bamboo shoots. The property offers almost 36 different types of vegetables, and you can also expect good yakuzen soup.

Fugu cuisine is another great option and the kaiseki will include appetizer, sashimi, charcoal grilled fugu, tetchiri (fish cut into large chunks filled with broth), fried fugu, fugu porridge, and dessert.

Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
