This machiya is over 100 years old, evident from its well-preserved historic features that add a unique twist to generic Japanese architectural traditions. The property is removed from the urban bustle, surrounding guests in a tranquil ambiance characterised by lush greenery.
Perhaps the property’s most striking feature is its unique roof, which seems akin to the roof of a Viking longhouse affixed to a standard irimoya roof. The interiors also show certain quirks in style, especially with the floor-to-ceiling windows interspersed with shoji doors. You’ll find several pieces of Japanese calligraphy spread across the property. Rooms are bedecked in tatami mats, chabudai, and floor cushions, embracing Japanese aesthetics.
