Marukoma Onsen Ryokan's history dates back to 1915 when Sasaki Hatsutaro discovered hot springs by Lake Shikotsu. The onsens were discovered by chance, as Sasaki saw smoke rising from the foot of Mount Eniwa. Reaching the springs was a task, as there were no roads in the virgin forest surrounding the springs. However, Sasaki was determined to find a solution and treat his neuralgia in the warm waters. He finally found the hot springs in 1915 and, with his wife, Toyo, fell in love with their therapeutic effects and beautiful setting. He established the property in 1917 during the Taishō era.
At first, there was only a thatched hut there, which sheltered many tired hikers and fishermen, or people looking for medical remedies. Gradually, it transformed into a hot spring inn. It was even considered part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park in 1949. After Sasaki died in 1947, his niece Yoshie Sasaki acquired the property and devoted all her time and energy to maintaining it. She was lovingly called "Marukoma's grandmother", and she's been immortalized through cafe Mémère (grandmother in French), which is located in the nearby Shikotsu Lake Onsen Shopping Arcade and directly managed by the ryokan. The Sapporo Olympics in 1972 brought with it the construction of roads and the boon of 24-hour electricity. After Yoshie's passing, Kinjiro took over the responsibility of the property and introduced thorough renovations in 1985. He worked with the local community to make Marukoma Onsen Ryokan what it is now. Over the years, it has hosted famous and important personalities, including members of the imperial family.
The ryokan also enjoys a significant location, perched on the shore of the historic caldera lake. The lake was formed around 40,000 years ago and has since been an important water source for Chitose. It also contributes to much of the experience that the ryokan offers. The guest rooms offer stunning lake views. Plus, the open-air onsen is right by the lake, almost making guests feel like they're bathing in the lake waters. Even the water level of the onsen is directly related to the water level of the lake.
Design and Architecture
The ryokan stays true to its roots by proudly showcasing traditional Japanese architecture. Although it was renovated thoroughly by Kinjiro in 1985, it retains many original features, including old woodwork and charming paper lamps. You'll find Japanese-style rooms with tatami mats, low beds, and shoji screens, creating a cozy ambiance. If you're looking for something a bit more modern, book the Japanese-Western-style room with relatively higher beds and lake views.
