Hyoe Koyokaku

Ryokans High Medieval to Renaissance
4-Star 8.8(99 reviews)
Kita-ku Arima-cho 1904, 651-1401 Kobe, Japan

Overview

Hyoe Koyokaku, named after the great Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi, is the perfect place to immerse in authentic Japanese culture and enjoy refreshing hot spring baths. The ryokan is 700 years old and is located in Arima Onsen, which is known for housing one of the country's oldest hot springs. The property itself has Kinsen-Golden hot spring baths where you can have therapeutic sessions. You may also opt for a chiropractic massage or spend some time in the therapy room to pamper yourself. When it comes to gastronomy, the ryokan offers multiple dining venues serving the best of the region. There are also chic lounges on site for socializing.

History

Although Hyoe Koyokaku's exact date of establishment is unknown, it's believed to have existed for around 700 years. Its first appearance in text can be traced back to the Muromachi period (1466), when it was mentioned in Inryoken Nichiroku, which was a record/diary kept by a monk. The onsen town where it's located, Arima Onsen, is in itself a historical attraction. It dates back over 1,000 years! The ryokan's name pays tribute to the legendary Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi. For the past 700 years, the property has maintained its policy of "hospitality with a smile", treating guests to authentic cultural experiences and maximum comfort. You'll be welcomed with sweets in your guest room and get to feel like a local in comfy yukatas (casual Kimono-style robes).

Design and Architecture

While the exterior of the property offers a blend of Japanese and Western styles, all of the ryokan's guest rooms are in the washitsu (traditional Japanese) style. Each comes with tatami mats on the floor, shoji screens that bring in beautiful natural light, fusuma (sliding doors), and the quintessential low tables and chairs. You will also find pretty seasonal flowers adding more life to the rooms. The lounges, on the other hand, boast a more modern and chic design.

Dining

With around 700 years of heritage to boast of, it's no surprise that Hyoe Koyokaku specializes in exquisite traditional cuisine. Head Chef Shimamoto Shinichi falls back on age-old recipes and methods to create authentic Japanese cuisine for guests. Ingredients are personally selected, and the meals are presented in a way that connects people to the property's heritage. Don't forget to try the special Kobe beef here. The beef is sourced from Hyogo prefecture's Tajima cattle and offers delicious flavors and taste. You can enjoy the beef in a shabu-shabu style meal or go for a Teppanyaki grill.

There are multiple dining venues on site. These include the main dining area, Mokuren, the charcoal-grill dining area, Ajisai, and the buffet restaurant and cafe, Hana no Mai. There's also a lobby with a coffee corner ideal for catching up with loved ones. As for the meal types, check out what you can expect at the ryokan below:

Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
