Overview

Dreaming of a rejuvenating retreat in an authentically Japanese hotel? Hakone Suishoen dates back to the Taisho era and is the perfect place to unwind, especially with its hot springs! The spring waters are mildly alkaline and there are indoor and outdoor baths where you can immerse yourself in relaxation. The on-site Spa by Sisley lets you take your remedies up a notch with all-hand treatments inspired by traditional rituals from all over the world. You can even customize your treatments!

Each season transforms Hakone Suishoen into a different blend of magic as the property is peppered with mature maple, cherry, and plum trees, some of which are up to 300 years old. The boughs turn verdant green in spring, while in autumn their fiery shades add ethereal beauty to the premises. So scroll down to learn more about Hakone Suishoen and book a stay here for an extraordinary holiday!

History

Hakone Suishoen, also known as Mitsui Suishoen, dates back to 1925 (Taisho era) and was originally the home of the aristocratic Mitsui family and retains much of its historic charm. However, Hakone isn't the historic home of the property; instead, the house, which was remade into the on-site Restaurant Momiji, was transported from its original location to Hakone! The home is a Registered Cultural Asset, signifying its immense cultural value, be it with its pedigree or architecture.

Design and Architecture

Restaurant Momiji is, of course, the historical and architectural centerpiece of the property. The space has original wooden floors and large windows, accentuating the pre-war ambiance of the structure. The rest of the property embodies a similar dedication to Japanese traditions, especially with the use of Edo karakami (a type of patterned paper out of which doors and windows are crafted) in its rooms. The Japanese-style room with Ryukyu tatami mats is the ideal option for those looking for an authentic Japanese stay.

Cultural Experiences

The on-site hot springs shouldn't be missed out on, and there are outdoor and indoor onsens where you can rejuvenate yourself. There are public baths just for women and one just for men. A dry sauna is available as well. If you're too shy to go to the public baths, you'll be delighted to know that each room has a private hot spring bath. The water is weakly alkaline.

The souvenir shop has original fragrances and traditional handcrafts such as yosegi-zaiku (a type of parquet work unique to Hakone) that you'll love!
