5-Star 9.1(2025 reviews)
Miyanoshita 359, 250-0404 Hakone, Japan

Overview

When Yamaguchi Sennosuke established Fujiya Hotel back in 1878, he envisioned a world-class establishment that would represent the finest of Japanese hospitality while pioneering new standards. It has been over 140 years since, and the hotel continues to add new facilities and amenities for the well-being and comfort of its guests and staff. This hotel in Hakone now boasts an estate of four large properties, each with its own theme and luxurious suites. There are also smaller yet equally significant buildings in the estate, such as the Imperial Summer Villa Kikka-So, which now operates as a restaurant. Don't forget to visit the hotel's museum, showcasing photos of Fujiya's celebrity visitors, including Charlie Chaplin, Neil Armstrong, and even Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

History

Having weathered over 140 years, Fujiya Hotel and the descendants of Yamaguchi Sennosuke can proudly boast to the world of their heritage as well as their dedication to the hospitality industry. Their story began in 1878 when Yamaguchi Sennosuke acquired the ryokan Fujiya Inn and reopened it as Hakone Miyanoshita Fugakukan Fujiya Hotel. Intending to cater mainly to foreign visitors, he remodeled the building with Western aesthetics and began offering Western-style stay experiences, such as serving meals with bread and meat. A blaze that was known as the Great Miyanoshita Fire of 1883 destroyed Fujiya Hotel, but the Yamaguchi took this as an opportunity to rebuild the property in a fully Western style.

Yamaguchi Shozo would inherit the leadership of Fujiya Hotel in 1914. By then, he already had extensive experience in management, having been adopted by Sennosuke and made manager at the hotel. His knowledge of the hospitality industry in foreign countries was also highly valued, having worked in the United States and England for many years before returning to Japan. During his tenure, he added the dining wing and the Flower Palace building to the estate. Another project of his was the Fujiya Hotel Sengoku Golf Course, recognized as among the finest golf courses in Japan, and is now the country's second oldest. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 also happened during Shozo's time, but their quick and resolute action and providing aid to the locals won the Yamaguchi and Fujiya Hotel the region's high regard for decades to come.

Shozo passed on his mantle of leadership to Yamaguchi Kenkichi in 1941. Known for his mild-mannered and down-to-earth personality, he took on the Yamaguchi name after marrying the second daughter of Yamaguchi Sennosuke. Under his management, he oversaw the construction of another building, the Forest Lodge. Rocky years soon arrived, caused by World War II and the eventual American Occupation, wherein the US Military commandeered hotels from all over Japan for their use. Kenkichi would successfully navigate these rough times and reopen Fujiya Hotel in 1954, after the US Military released its control of the hotel.

Fujiya Hotel coasted along the decades that followed, riding the economic bubble and weathering the recession that followed. It wouldn't be until 2013 that significant remodeling and renovations would be done, brought about by new amendments to the 1995 Act on Promotion of Seismic Retrofit of Buildings. The management took this as an opportunity to once again transform Fujiya Hotel, along with celebrating the hotel's 140th anniversary in 2018. Construction was completed in 2020 , just in time to welcome the arrival of Japan's Reiwa Era.

Design and Architecture

Fujiya Hotel's four large buildings come with their own themes and aesthetics, reflecting the philosophy and sense of the company president who established them. The Main Building was built in 1891, during the Meiji Era, and reflects the early blending of Western and Japanese styles with the temple-like roof and louver windows. The Comfy Lodge and Restful Cottage were built in 1906, still in the Meiji Era, but by this time, the distinct architectural styles of the period were much better defined. Similar to the main building, these two mansion-like buildings feature a temple-like roof but also a gabled entrance. The interior design for these two buildings are very much in the Western style, and some guests might even mistake them to be contemporary despite the age of the buildings.

The next addition to Fujiya Hotel wouldn't be until 1936, when Yamaguchi Shozo added the Flower Palace. This one features a mix of gabled roofs and walls inspired by log cabins. Rooms are a mix of Western-style designs and heritage architecture with detailed woodwork that features classical construction styles. The latest of the four properties is the Forest Wing, added in 1960, and features a colorful modern exterior contrasted by sleek minimalist interiors.

Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
