Choya Goshominami Machiya

Machiya Industrial & Imperial Era
4-Star 9.1(28 reviews)
Nakagyo-ku Sugiya-cho 627-12, 604-0822 Kyoto, Japan

Overview

Choya Goshominami Machiya sits in one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Kyoto, right between the Imperial Palace's National Garden and the bustling shopping streets of Nishiki Market. Subway stations, cultural museums, and historic neighborhoods are also within walking distance. The convenience alone makes this vacation rental a top option, but the machiya's heritage shouldn't be discounted. Its original woodwork and carpentry are still intact, and now reinforced using modern materials. The interior decor is also of contemporary design, yet remains consistent with traditional aesthetics. The bathroom, in particular, seems like it belongs in a luxury hotel, but the sleek style and relaxing atmosphere are perfect for winding down after a day of touring Kyoto.

History

While Choya Goshominami Machiya's actual age is obscured by the passage of time, its historic features are still very much intact in the present. Dried and aged wooden beams and supports line the walls and ceilings, perhaps creaking at times due to the weather. The home is located in one of Kyoto's oldest districts, just several blocks south of Kyoto Gyoen National Garden and the Imperial Palace. While the machiya itself would have only existed in the Edo Period, the neighborhood's long history is worth getting to know so don't forget to take a walk and explore Kyoto's old streets.

Design and Architecture

Machiya Residence Inn's beautiful properties love to blend together historic and contemporary aspects, creating an eclectic home that preserves heritage for future generations while providing comfort and convenience for the present-day. That style is very much apparent all over Choya Goshominami, from the presence of both Western and Japanese-style bedrooms , to old interiors being given a modern makeover. The dining area, for example, no longer uses a sunken irori hearth, opting for electrical appliances as there's less risk of causing a fire. The bathroom is another, offering a posh and sleek Western design while maintaining Japanese conventions of having a washing area and a tub for soaking. There's also the tsuboniwa garden at the entrance, making use of the available space to ensure a beloved part of Japanese homes won't be left out of the property.

Events and experiences

Cultural Experiences

With where Choya Goshominami Machiya is located, you won't easily run out of places to visit and experiences to try. Kyoto Gyoen National Garden is just straight north of the property, where you can take wonderful photo opportunities, or just enjoy the serenity and beauty of Japanese gardening and landscaping. It's also where the Kyoto Imperial Palace is nestled, so you may want to take separate days to enjoy both. A little to the west of the machiya is Kunjyukan, a museum dedicated to Kyoto's incense industry. It's quite popular with the youth because of its aromatics and Insta-worthy exhibits. If you want to visit a very historically significant spot, head over to Honno-ji, the Buddhist temple where the Unifier warlord Oda Nobunaga made his final stand against his traitorous vassal Akechi Mitsuhide.

If that's not enough, there are plenty more nearby attractions to line your itinerary, such as Nijo Castle, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and the Museum of Kyoto.

Other Celebrations

A party at Choya Goshominami Machiya might be difficult to arrange as events are normally prohibited. Cultural etiquette

  • Bowing (ojigi): It's advisable to bow to show respect when greeting someone. It can also be done to show gratitude or convey an apology.
  • Shoe etiquette: You must remove your outside footwear before stepping on the elevated area of the genkan (entrance) and entering a house. You should also ensure not to step on the lower area of the genkan without your shoes on. Shoes must be kept facing the entrance. If you wear socks, they should be clean and without any holes.
  • Slipper etiquette: It's usually better to wear fresh socks or slippers inside the house, especially for formal situations. Make sure to remove your slippers before stepping into a room with tatami mats on the floor. There should also be a separate set of slippers for the washroom.
  • Dining etiquette: How you hold and place your chopsticks while dining is crucial. For example, they shouldn't be held upright when eating rice. You must also place them on a holder when you're not using them. It's good to say "Itadakimasu" before starting a meal and "Gochisousama deshita" after completing it.
  • Tipping etiquette: Tipping isn't a common practice in Japan and may be considered rude.
  • Luggage etiquette: Luggage, especially those with wheels, should be carried instead of being dragged across the floor as it might damage the tatami mats or wooden flooring.
  • Photography etiquette: Photography rules can change from place to place, so make sure to check for signs or ask the staff before taking pictures anywhere.
  • Queueing etiquette: Make sure to maintain queues and never cut in line.
  • Onsen etiquette: Some onsens don't allow tattoos, so check with the staff before getting into one. You must also shower and be clean before entering a shared onsen bath.
  • Bathing etiquette: Japanese baths include separate areas for washing while the tub itself is meant only for soaking. This means bathers must first wash, scrub, and rinse themselves before entering the bath tub.
