Manoir De Ponsay is a feudal family manor and estate that dates all the way back to the 15th century. The estate was listed in 1492, though there are earlier accounts that imply the manor had already existed before that year. These include the story of King Louis XI, who died in 1483, having stayed in the estate during his hunting trips.
The Ponsay Family acquired the property in 1644, staying in their hands for centuries, even to this day. The current owners are Laurent and Aurelia de Ponsay, who are the 12th generation stewards of the property.
Design and Architecture
Over the centuries, the Ponsays have kept the manor intact, including the buildings that have been around since the 15th century. The main manor building is flanked by a square pavilion tower and a cylindrical turret tower. Behind the manor is another tower, built in a much older style than those connected to the manor. Aside from these towers, there's also an eye-catching dovecote tower, separate from the main building and recognized as one of the oldest surviving dovecotes in France.
For its interior areas, Manoir De Ponsay has an array of stylish, well-appointed guestrooms. These are equipped with modern comforts such as HVAC systems, media players, and game consoles. Contrasting these appliances are the lovely vintage and antique furniture and decor. From exquisite armoires and desks to posh beds fit for royalty, these are items the Ponsays have collected over the centuries, and were made usable to guests instead of just letting them gather dust. Other classic features visitors will notice during their stay are the old timbers on the ceilings. Some rooms have replaced these and given a modern finish, while other guest units retained the bare aged timbers as part of the aesthetic.
