L'Abbaye d'Alspach traces to its roots to the Order of Saint Clare and their convent, Abbaye d'Alspach, in Kaysersberg. The building of the hotel was an annex building of the sisterhood, built sometime 700 years ago. While the Order exists to this day, its former holdings have been sold or lost over the centuries. Currently, the Abbey of Alspach is owned by Colmar's Unterlinden Museum. The annex building was acquired by Philippe and Annick Schwartz back in 1976, carefully restoring it before opening it into the hotel we know today.
Design and Architecture
It was quite fortunate that Philippe and Annick chose to preserve the convent's classical features when they acquired the property in 1976. Throughout the hotel, guests can find many old features; much of the old wood can be found in the guestrooms, usually as timbers or wall panels. Likewise, some of the doorframes and doors show signs of their venerable age, which are complemented by actual antique furniture that guests can use.
Right next to the hotel is another property operated by the Schwartz family - the vacation gite La Maison Bleue. Much like L'Abbaye d'Alspach, the maison is a restored medieval building with many of its own traditional features left intact. It's a self-catering property and has the right amount of space for medium-sized families or groups of friends.
