The town of Guéthary began as a quiet little fishing village during the 12th century, eventually growing into a town as the whaling industry developed in France. Arguably, it could be considered a blessing that the town didn't grow much larger after that, becoming an idyllic and scenic commune along the Bay of Biscay. Because of this, the establishment of Hotel Villa Catarie became possible, and travelers can find themselves a peaceful and charming rural retreat close to the Atlantic Ocean and the Spanish border.
The hotel was originally a traditional Basque half-timbered house built sometime in the 18th century. Much like the rest of the town, it is in a well-preserved state, both for its exterior and interior features. It did undergo modifications and modernizations, such as the addition of an outdoor swimming pool, but for the most part, the heritage aspect of the hotel is intact.
Design and Architecture
For its aesthetics, Hotel Villa Catarie blends the town's coastal aspect with the region's rural farming charms. The hotel's guestrooms are all modernized, but presented in a striking traditional style usually seen in posh chateaux where nobles once lived. Each is individually styled in subtle themes and equipped with antique or vintage furniture. Details such as rococo walls and ceilings are complemented by taking advantage of the region's rich natural lighting, instead of relying on fancy fixtures to provide illumination.
