Overview

Acquired and transformed into a hotel in 1988, this 18th-century country house is among the finest heritage stays you can find while visiting the shores of Normandy. Built by the Gosset family and expanded in 1880, Chateau La Cheneviere welcomes guests with wonderful suites and rooms alongside a slew of comfortable amenities. The restaurants of the hotel make use of a permaculture garden, providing guests with delicious meals made with fresh produce. Cultural adventures are plentiful in Normandy. One day you're viewing the Bayeux Tapestry and Norman armaments, and the next you're sunbathing with your pet over at Omaha Beach! That brings us to another great aspect of Chateau La Cheneviere—the hotel is quite pet-friendly and provides bowls and a basket bed for your fur baby.

History

Chateau La Cheneviere was first founded in the 18th century by the Gosset family, who built the country manor on an estate surrounded by hemp fields. It was expanded in 1880 by Gustave and Pierre Gosset who added extra sections to the home, along with expansive stables for the horses. During World War 2, the chateau was commandeered by Nazi German troops and was used as their headquarters in the area. A French Resistance soldier named Armand Lapierre was instrumental in disabling communications around the chateau just days before the D-Day Normandy Invasion, and a memorial plaque is dedicated to him at the hotel.

Eventually, Chateau La Cheneviere was acquired by Marie-Françoise and Thomas Dicker in 1988. They turned the country manor and estate into a classy hotel. The name La Chenevière is actually derived from the nickname of the building, La Chenevrotte, which means hemp chaff.

Design and Architecture
Chateau La Cheneviere is a modern hotel with well-maintained old features. Many parts of the chateau have since been remodeled into facilities and accommodations. Of note are the vast stables built by the Gossets, which are now rooms and suites featuring vintage decor. The conservatory of the estate, on the other hand, has been integrated and made into the restaurant Le Petit Jardin. While it may affect the rustic ambiance for some, the comfort provided by the modernized amenities will make stays much more pleasant.
