Overview

Château de Saint Paterne is a property full of contrasting charms. Its exterior has a humble facade, relying on stable and reliable stonework architecture that has weathered the centuries. Yet its interiors very much live up to the opulence French aristocrats lived in. It was built in the 15th century and was known as the residence of King Henry's mistress. Today, the estate is the gorgeous residence of the Valbray family, who operates the chateau as a stately bed & breakfast recognized by the Michelin Guide. Guests can relax with the spa and pool facilities, or take advantage of the estate for fitness and wellness. There are also numerous cultural sites to visit and outdoor activities to try, such as the Château des Ducs of Alençon and private tour flights around the countryside, respectively.

History

Château de Saint Paterne has been around for over 500 years, making it a well-known landmark in the commune of Saint-Paterne. Built sometime in the 15th century, the estate immediately gained a reputation when it became the residence of King Henry IV's mistress, Diane de Courtemanche. It's worth noting that the very same room where King Henry IV and Diane conducted their romantic encounters is among the chambers available for lodging, aptly named the Henri IV Room.

The next milestone in the chateau's history took place in the 18th century when it was given a touch-up as well as an expansion. After that, the estate would remain quiet and untouched until it was purchased by its current owners in 1989. Charles-Henry and Ségolène de Valbray made the estate their own, where they raised their three sons. Together, the family has been diligent in maintaining the historic beauty of the manor and its parklands, while providing exceptional service as an opulent bed & breakfast.

Design and Architecture

The Valbrays have kept the original regal charm of Château de Saint Paterne mainly intact, opting to improve on the decor instead of tearing anything down. They would liven up the chateau's general areas by using soft lighting and candles, creating a classical sense of opulence that immerses guests in the splendor. Modern period-style furnishings blend in with actual antiques, while precious portraits, paintings, and ceramics decorate the walls and halls.

The guest suites at Château de Saint Paterne are individually themed, representing a historical aspect of the estate. The most famous is arguably the Henri IV Room, where the king's mistress once lived. The architecture and interior design of the rooms don't necessarily adhere to a unified period, as each also focuses on functionality and practicality. Like the rest of the estate, the owners charmingly combined contemporary aesthetics with classical conventions, creating a stay experience that is comfortable yet still reminds guests of its rich heritage.

Though the château offers plenty to enjoy, the enchanting French countryside beckons just beyond its gates. The owners can help you book excursions, including off-road SUV drives, as well as horseback rides. You can also book a private tour flight and admire the Sarthe department from a bird's-eye perspective.

The city of Alençon is filled with historic buildings and landmarks you should check out. The Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Alençon is an impressive Gothic church built upon the ruins of an older Romanesque church from the 12th century. On the other hand, the Château of the Dukes of Alençon is the remnants of a grand fortified estate from where the region's dukes ruled and lived. Most of the castle was already torn down in the 16th century, under the orders of King Henry IV, but the remaining walls and towers are still impressive to behold.
