Overview

It's easy to fall in love with Chateau De La Caze. The 15th-century castle looks straight out of a fairytale. It still showcases architecture from that era and is surrounded by lush greenery and golden peaks, nestled by the Tarn River. The hotel's private beach is perfect for spending sunny mornings, and its verdant park will impress nature lovers and pets. The luxurious interiors are equally enticing. You'll find rooms and suites with vintage furniture, some of them even featuring a terrace overlooking the surrounding scenery. The units are spread across the main castle and its annex, Maison de Martine. The latter is tucked away in the park, only a few feet away from the castle.

History

Although Château de la Caze came into being in the late 15th century, its history can be traced way back to the 13th century. The erstwhile commune of La Caze also housed the Abbey of Sainte-Enimie. In the late 13th century, La Caze was under the jurisdiction of the priors of the monastery. During that time, the noble Alamand family of Mende was quite influential. They used to serve as priors and dignitaries of the monastery. Soubeyrane, who belonged to the Alamand family was the person who imagined the construction of the chateau. She married Guillaume de Montclar in 1488 and soon wished to build a castle to serve as their beloved home. Château de la Caze was completed in 1492 and its beauty and majesty awed everyone in the kingdom.

After Soubeyrane's death, her eldest daughter, Gabrielle inherited the castle. She was more than suitable to watch over the property, but after her death, none of her sisters could inherit it, as most of them were childless. Only her youngest sister, Françoise, had a daughter, Anne, who came to inherit the castle. As Anne had no child, the inheritance was passed to Jacquette de Mostuéjouls, her husband's child from his second marriage. Since then, the castle has been passed from one generation to another. During the time of descendant Jean Baptiste, the chateau was even used as a prison! Finally, it was reacquired and designated as a national property.

Design and Architecture

Despite renovations and modern enhancements, the castle still boasts its former glory with 15th-century architecture and furniture from the 17th and 19th centuries. The grand stone exterior will remind you of quintessential ancient castles. You can find arches, exposed stone and bricks, frescoes, and antique furnishings inside the property, including the warm and welcoming guest rooms and suites. Maison de Martine also showcases period architecture and design with an inclination toward southern architectural styles. Even the pool area gives out a classic vibe with its wooden patio.
