History

The story of Chateau de Candie goes as far back as the 14th century, with references to a fortified estate belonging to the Chaffaron family, who would later become the noble family Candie. They were considered prominent as they were on close terms with the Savoie family to hunt together, and were regular participants at tournaments. However, their fortunes took a turn, and the estate was sold, passing hands several times before being bought by an Italian merchant named Jean André Sarde. The Sardre family lived here for over a century, adding and expanding facilities to the estate.

However, their last family head, Henry François Joseph Sarde, did not have any heirs and donated the estate to charity. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, Chateau de Candie was owned by the Tredicini family, who used the chateau as their family home.

Didier Lhostis, an antique collector and leatherworker, purchased and restored the estate in 1990. Once he was satisfied with the state of the property, he opened the estate as a hotel in 1994. Lhostis also opened the Chateau des Allues, another historic property in Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny. It was also during Lhostis's ownership that the estate was relocated to the vineyards, successfully moving the facilities and crops to another section of the estate in 2003.

The current owners of Chateau de Candie acquired the estate in 2016. The businessmen Richard Green and Roger Borne are also the owners of Madame Vacances, a hotelier brand specializing in a wide variety of traditional lodgings. Under their management, they set about transforming the chateau into a stunning fixture of Chambery, where both locals and travelers can stay, dine, relax, and even party.

Candie 1891

Also served at Chateau de Candie is their signature vintage, Candie 1891. The estate has had a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 14th century. Unfortunately, an infestation of phylloxera in 1879 would destroy the vineyards. It wouldn't be until over a century later, in 2003, that the chateau once again grew grapes and pressed new wines. The chefs of Chateau de Candie masterfully integrate the white wine in many of the restaurant's dishes, as well as ensuring that the menu's flavors harmonize with the wine.
