Auberge Saint Walfrid had a humble beginning as an annex to a priory. It was built in 1711 and derives its name from the patron saint of Benedictine monks, Saint Walfrid. The monks had to vacate the property after the French Revolution, and it transformed into a shelter for carters. The Schneider family became the new owners, who continued to provide warm hospitality and delicious food to visitors.
The cozy eatery quickly expanded into a fine dining establishment, receiving its first Michelin star in 1977. After losing the star in 1994, Auberge Saint Walfrid regained it in 1998, solidifying its standing as a prestigious establishment.
Today, the place is run by Stephan Schneider, who belongs to the fifth generation of the Schneiders. He has painstakingly preserved and upheld his family's traditions and the region's heritage, while at the same time introducing modern features to the hotel. Thanks to his efforts, in 2019, Auberge Saint Walfrid earned the MOSL Quality label.
Design and Architecture
Auberge Saint-Walfrid boasts 18th-century architecture with mostly a classic facade and some modern additions. The hotel has three wings, with the Faïences de Sarreguemines still retaining its historic features and antique furniture. The Cristal de Saint-Louis wing offers accommodations showcasing Saint-Louis crystal. Meanwhile, the Peintres Lorrains wing features more modern rooms decorated with artwork by Lorraine painters. Other than that, you'll find exposed wooden beams, stone walls, and other remnants of the past here and there.
